Your business might be invisible to ChatGPT (here's the 5-minute check)
More people start their search inside an AI tool now, and about 78% of local businesses are invisible to it. Here's a 5-minute check, and how to fix it.
Quick story.
The other day I watched someone ask ChatGPT to recommend a contractor near them. It gave back three names. Confident. Specific. Helpful. The best company in that town? Not on the list. The AI had no idea it existed.
Here's the part that should make every business owner sit up straight: more than 1 in 3 people now start their search inside an AI tool. ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Google's AI answers. Not the blue links anymore. The answer.
And right now, about 78% of local businesses are completely invisible to those tools. Not ranking low… invisible. If the AI doesn't mention you, you don't exist for that buyer. There's no page two to scroll to. There's just the answer, and whoever made it in.
The 5-minute check (go do this right now)
Open ChatGPT or Perplexity and ask it like a customer would:
- "Who are the best [what you do] in [your city]?"
- "I need [your service]. Who should I call?"
- "Tell me about [your business name]."
Then look for three things: Do you show up at all? If you do, is what it says about you actually right? And does it know your specialty, your area, the thing that makes you you?
If the answer is "nope," "not really," or "it made something up"… congrats, you just found your gap. That last one is sneaky, by the way. An AI confidently describing you wrong is its own headache.
Why this happens (and why it's not your fault)
AI tools can't read a pretty website the way a person can. They need structure. Clear signals about who you are, what you do, who you serve, and proof you're the real deal. Most sites were built to look good to humans, not to be readable by a machine. So the machine just… skips them.
The fix has a name: generative engine optimization (GEO). Think of it as SEO for the AI era.
3 things that actually move the needle
- Be consistent everywhere. Your name, what you do, your location, your details need to match across your site and every profile AI reads (Google Business Profile, socials, directories). Mismatched info makes you look like a stranger.
- Answer real questions, plainly. The exact things customers ask, answered up top, in clear language. AI loves to quote a clean, direct answer.
- Add the structure AI needs. The behind-the-scenes data that spells out who you are. It's the difference between "understood" and "skipped."

Want the shortcut?
I made a free GEO & AEO checklist you can run through in one sitting. Tick the boxes, find your gaps, save it as a PDF. No email wall. And if you'd rather just see where you stand, the free AI check will show you.
The businesses that win AI search over the next year are the ones doing this now, while it's early and most people are asleep on it. That can be you. 😊
